VMAX3 Engines

  • A critical building block of a VMAX3 system primarily consisting of two redundant director boards (controllers) that house global memory, front-end connectivity, back-end connectivity, and internal network communications components
  • VMAX3 single-engine configurations are fully redundant
  • Individual system bays can house either one or two engines with a maximum of either 720 2.5” drives or 360 3.5” drives located in the DAEs
  • The different models of VMAX3 systems support different engine counts:
    • VMAX 100K supports 1 to 4 engines
    • VMAX 200K supports 1 to 4 engines
    • VMAX 400K supports 1 to 8 engines

  • ICMs has expanders that interface to the rest of the system, including cables to the back-end I/O modules and expansion DAEs
  • LCCs have four expanders that each interface to the ICM and drives; each drive expander connects to 30 drives for a total of 120 drives
  • LCC A and LCC B connect to the dual ports on each drive for redundancy
  • Drives support two independent I/O channels with automatic failover and fault isolation
